The 3rd Dokdo International Souvenir

Design Competition

 

It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the international souvenir design competition for "Dokdo, a beautiful island in the East Sea of Korea." Dokdo is an island which embraces the history and culture of Korea. We welcome your creative ideas and designs which will be used as the next symbol of Dokdo.

Art. 1. The Aims of the Competition

Gyeongsangbuk-do (hereinafter “the Province”), a local state government of the Republic of Korea, launches the 3^rd Dokdo International Souvenir Design Competition with the aim of showcasing the most creative and attractive souvenir design well-representing “Dokdo, a beautiful island in the East Sea of Korea.” 

 

This competition is run by “Daegu Gyeongbuk Handcrafts Association” (hereinafter “the Association”). It is sponsored by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, Northeast Asian History Foundation, Ulleung County, Dokdo Museum, and Korea Creative Content Agency.

 

Art. 2. Theme of the 2012 Competition

Dokdo is described to the global community as “a beautiful tour-island of Korea” having enriched resources from the nature and possessing historical significance. Dokdo is not only located in the middle of the East Sea of Korea. Dokdo can be found in the history and heart of Koreans all over the world. Also, it is a great habitat for various sea creatures and birds. To accurately express Dokdo, it will be helpful to learn more about this island in the East Sea and find it in the heart of Koreans and their history. Art. 3. Area of Competition

This competition has two areas: (i) a creative design draft or a mock-up for the Dokdo souvenir or (ii) a completed Dokdo souvenir. Participants shall consider the following in making their designs:

 Item for national and international tourists

 Eco-item, IT related item,

 Mass production, merchantability

 Item that reflect Korean traditional art

*Extra-points will be awarded to designs that will draw the interest and attraction of international tourists.

 

Art. 4. Criteria for Participation

The competition is open to all including Korean and non-Korean nationals and professional and non-professional designers. An individual or a team of not more than two members are eligible.

Participation in this competition is free.

 

Art. 5. Important Dates (Korea Time)

  Oct. 9 ~ 10, 2012 (2 days) Submission by visit

*Oct. 10, 6pm. Deadline for Submission by Mail    and E-mail

  Oct. 12. Result released on the homepage of the province and the association

  Oct. 18. Ceremony in Daegu, Korea

  Oct. 18~21. Exhibition in Daegu

  Nov. ~ Dec.  Additional Exhibition (TBA)

 

Art. 6. Submission

[1] Participants for “Souvenir Design Draft” shall submit the followings:

  a copy of the Competition Application

  a copy of the Description of Design or Souvenir

  Design Draft

 

*Design Draft shall be in the form of board-photo graphics and the size measurements should be smaller than 60cm x 60cm; the photo must have a good quality and size for the judges’ review.

*If you want to send an electronic file of Design Draft, please email at “dkcrafts@hanmail.net” and the total size should be smaller than 5MB and JPG.

 

*Email submission is allowed onLY to “Design Draft” participants. (For successful email submission, confirmation email will be sent.)

 

[2] Participants for “Completed Souvenir or Mock-up Souvenir” shall submit the followings:

  a copy of the Competition Application

  a copy of the Description of Design or Souvenir

  completed souvenir or mock-up souvenir

*All materials can be submitted by applicant’s visiting to Daegu Gyeongbuk Design Center in Daegu from Oct. 9 ~ 10, 2012

*The maximum number of submission per person or a team: TWO designs

Ex) Design Draft (1) + Mock-up Souvenir (1) (allowed)

Design Draft (2) + Mock-up Souvenir (1) (not allowed)

 

*A set of souvenir designs will be counted as onE-design. With one theme, if you design a cup, hat, file folder, etc. it will be regarded as onE SET and one-design.

 

*Judges may request more information if it is needed.

 

*The host and running organization waives any liability of the loss or damage in terms of your submissions during the delivery and before final acceptance.

 

Art. 7. Prize

Dokdo Design Award(1): 6,000,000 won  

                    (*Around 5,000 USD)

I . Creative Design

  Golden Prize (1): 3,000,000 won

  Silver Prize (1): 1,500,000 won

  Bronze Prize (2): 700,000 won

  Special Prize (2): 500,000 won

 

II. Mock-up Souvenir

  Golden Prize (1): 3,000,000 won

  Silver Prize (2): 1,500,000 won

  Bronze Prize (3): 700,000 won

  Special Prize (4): 500,000 won

 

In addition, there are 20 Entry-Prizes in both categories. The recipients will receive prizes in Korean currency (KRW). 

 

*Based on the quality of the submissions, the number of prizes can be changed.

 

Art. 8. Limitations

The following may not be submitted and will not be considered for evaluation:

  A design awarded from other competition;

  A similar or copied design of existing products in the nation or abroad;

  An item very expensive or hard to deliver or to stock;

  An item costs too much investment such as making an animation film;

 An item without basic marketing setting such as price, explanation, and packing etc.;

 An item prohibited from most countries’ customs due to its material character; or

 An item is not complied with the submission rule in the Art. 6.

 

Art. 9. Benefits for the winners

  The right to sell and exhibit the winner’s design in facilities related to Dokdo.

Ex) Dokdo Museum, Ahn Yongbok Memorial Center, Dokdo Office, and Souvenir Shops

  Free exhibition at Dokdo Exhibition Hall in the Provincial Office, and public release on the Cyber Dokdo (www.dokdo.go.kr).

  Publishing a design book and administrative assistance for marketing the design.

 

Art. 10. Confidentiality and Rights of Use

  All material submitted will be treated as strictly confidential.

  The ownership of the winning design or souvenir from the Silver Prize and higher will belong to the Province.

  Other winner designs or souvenirs below the Silver Prize will be returned after the exhibition after January 2013.

  The copyrights of all winning designs and souvenirs belong to the Province. The design can be used full or in part and may be redesigned by the Province.

  Returning all the completed souvenir and mock-up souvenir out of the prize entry, the applicant has responsibility to visit and take their own souvenir during Oct. 15~16, 2012. For those who cannot visit and take the souvenir, if you send the fee for mail, the association will mail them and the association has no liability for any damage on the delivery.
